What is TMS Treatment and How Can It Help My Depression?

Uncategorized . 3 minutes read . September 30, 2021

Depression is one of the most common mental health illnesses among Australians, affecting an estimated one million individuals each year. The treatment procedure can be tough for individuals who have been battling the condition for a long time, especially for those who have not seen any progress. Additionally, some individuals may be unaware that there are additional therapy options available in Australia.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive therapy that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to relieve depression symptoms. TMS (or rTMS) is generally used when other forms of depression therapy have failed. It is a drug-free approach that is effective, scientifically proven and TGA-approved.

TMS treatment is especially beneficial for patients who have had little or no success with traditional therapies, such as medication or psychotherapy. It is a painless, drug-free treatment with fewer adverse effects than any other alternatives. Unlike vagus nerve stimulation and deep brain stimulation, rTMS does not require surgery or electrode implantation. Furthermore, unlike electroconvulsive treatment (ECT), rTMS does not induce seizures or necessitate sedation with anesthesia.

During the TMS treatment session, an electromagnetic coil is placed on the patient’s scalp near the forehead. A magnetic pulse is then sent painlessly into the region of the brain that is responsible for mood regulation. Evidence shows that rTMS activates a part of the brain that improve a patient’s mood and decrease depression symptoms. It achieves a comparable outcome to ECT, but without the trouble of travelling to the hospital, the stress of anesthesia and the impact of any side effects.

rTMS is often performed in a clinic. To be successful, it takes several therapy sessions, which are typically performed daily, five times a week for four to six weeks.

Before beginning treatment, your doctor will need to determine the optimal location for the magnets on your head as well as the appropriate dose of magnetic energy for you. Your initial session will usually take around 60 minutes.

Here’s what you can expect from each treatment: You’ll be seated in a comfortable chair, wearing earplugs and the magnetic coil will be positioned on your head. The procedure will take around 40 minutes, and you will be awake and attentive throughout. You may experience minor scalp discomfort during and after the treatment.

After each treatment, you can return to your normal daily activities.

Depression is treatable, but for some people, traditional approaches are ineffective. rTMS is generally used when these standard treatments do not work. There are several advantages to using rTMS as a depression therapy, including the fact that it is drug-free and non-invasive. Another benefit is that it is a simple procedure that allows patients to be awake and aware throughout.
