Addressing Mental Health in Medicine: The Inception of a Transformative Award
The inception of this award was prompted by a pressing need to address the alarming rate of suicide among young doctors. The year 2016 witnessed the tragic loss of four young doctors within three months, casting a shadow of trauma, grief, and sorrow over the medical community. This profound loss sparked a wave of frustration and isolation among many, as the underlying issues within medical culture remained unaddressed.
The tragic loss of four young doctors within three months in 2016 was a wake-up call for the medical community. Recognizing the need to address the mental health challenges faced by young professionals, Padmini and Daya partnered with Western Sydney University (WSU) to establish an award that champions mental well-being among medical students. Since 2017, this initiative has encouraged second-year medical students at WSU's Faculty of Medicine to engage deeply with mental health topics, fostering a supportive and proactive culture.
The Foundation of the Award
Established in partnership with WSU to address alarming suicide rates among young doctors.
Inspired by the tragic events of 2016, with the aim of preventing future tragedies.

Integrated into the second-year medical curriculum at WSU.

Pawstive - steps towards mental health
Each year, the Hills Shire community gathers for the Pawsitive Steps Festival. The Pawsome-Awesome Day offers education, support, and promotes help-seeking behavior, addressing suicide and violence prevention.
